ission San Jose, founded in 1797 was the most successful Mission in Northern California--thousands of cattle, horses and sheep, acres of corn and wheat, and olives--vast orchards and tree lined avenues of olives. Secularization in 1834 ended the dominance of the Missions--all that had been planted and nurtured slowly went back to nature. Such was its fate until the California Gold Rush. Mission San Jose once again became an agricultural center and the Mission buildings became the hotel, general store and Post Office.

Much has changed since the Mission days, but celebrating the olive harvest continues.  The Mission grounds come alive with a barbecue, live entertainment and a display of old fashioned farm equipment.  This one day event is held in October.

Until then, take a day off, walk through the quiet Mission gardens and enjoy the historic heart of Fremont.
